Panic Attack Help: Aiding People Who Suffer
If a person shows a manifestation of extreme fear or anxiety with no apparent reason, which causes him to feel something similar to having a heart attack, the person might be suffering from a panic attack. Usually, it causes palpitation, increased heart rate, hyperventilation, or sweating. The person might think that he is dying and not know that panic attack help is available. The attack normally lasts from five to twenty minutes. Panic attack is not life threatening though it immensely affects a person’s social life. It prevents a person from doing many things because of fear for anything that could trigger an attack. He would avoid going to crowded places, or anywhere a trigger could be present.
During a panic attack, it is important to call for medical assistance to make sure that the person is not suffering from any other complication especially those who also suffer from asthma or any heart disease. The situation might look very distressing but it is important to keep the person calm by keeping yourself calm too otherwise, you might add more panic to the person instead of relieving him. Try to talk to the person to know what is possibly causing the attack and try to take the person away from it but do not force him by grabbing him away, which may inflict unintentional hurt because that could worsen the person’s condition. Let him move around if he wants. You may also ask him to walk with you to calm him down in order to provide panic attack help.
It is also important not to dismiss the person’s feeling of fear. It may not look real to you but it is very real to the person under attack. It will not be effective panic attack help if you will make him feel like he is crazy. Let the person relax by asking him to breathe normally. Usually, a person suffering from a panic attack holds his breath or makes short and rapid breathing. This could lead to hyperventilation, which causes dizziness and a feeling of passing out. When a person regains control of his breathing, some of the symptoms may start going away and that would calm him down. It is also important to keep them cool. It would help them calm down especially in cases wherein the person feels hot sensation on the face and neck. Cold compress could give panic attack help.
Patience and understanding provides a lot of panic attack help. Assure the person of your assistance and do not leave him alone.
